My life and photography, or how I got to be a photographer

I believe in doing what you love and I have discovered  that I love nothing better than coming home after a trip out with my camera and seeing the visual magic that is created when light, form and mood combine in exactly the right way.

I most enjoy capturing those moments when people or animals do not know that you are observing them, and you catch them with their souls exposed. This is when they are at their most beautiful.

My style is best described as photojournalism which means that I do not do studio work and try as much as possible to avoid posed photos. The best photos are made when people are just doing what they do all by themselves.

I explored photography during my theatre arts & design studies, but mostly used it to make the best possible photos of my scenery in tricky theatre lighting conditions.

When I moved to Europe I started to do completely different work but a camera of some sort was always close at hand.

Then the age of digital photography dawned and I got my first digital camera, a small 3.2 mp Samsung Digimax, with which I made some pretty memorable shots.

And then I got a dog. I soon discovered that the slow shutter response of the Samsung was just not good enough. Or maybe I should say my dog was too fast for my camera. So I got myself a digital SLR camera and soon I had hundreds of great action shots of my dog, the local wild life and friends.

I increasingly found I could express my creativity with this camera with a degree of freedom I never had using any other medium.
